Frequently Asked Questions for Domain Names
How do I check if a domain name is available?
To check if a domain name is available simply use our domain name search. Some domains may already be taken. If a domain is already taken it usually means it is either being reserved by the Registry or registered in someone else's name. You can choose to search for the domain name and make an offer to the owner of the domain name if you wish.
What makes up a domain name?
A domain consists of a few parts that combine to make it a full website address. For example www.example.com is a domain name, with the .com being the Top-level domain (TLD), second level domain would be "example" and www is considered a subdomain.
Web addresses can contain a mixture of numbers, letters and even hyphens to make your domain easier to read. Special characters like punctuation marks are not allowed though. Domain names ignore upper and lower case, so example.com and EXAMPLE.com will resolve to the same domain.
What TLD should I pick for my website?
With hundreds of different top-level domains popping up, its hard to decide which one would be perfect for your website. You can go for a more specific TLD that matches your website, such as .art, .coffee or .kitchen. There are also domains to match your country such as .scot, .uk or .wales for example.
Of course you can still search and purchase the classics such as .com, .net, .org or .co.uk for your domain name, but its good to know that with a long and ever growing list of different TLDs out there, you can mix and match to find one that is perfect for your website.
Should I purchase multiple extensions for the same domain name?
We advise that you buy the most popular domain extensions for your registered domain name. Say you have mywebsite.com as your main domain name, buy mywebsite.net, mywebsite.co.uk and mywebsite.org which can be redirected to your original site. Making it easier for visitors and stops the chance of anyone else buying a similar domain name to your own.
How long or short can a domain name be?
Domain names can be as long as 63 characters and as short as 1 character. We advise keeping your domain name as short and as simple as possible, making it easier to type and remember.
Can I transfer my domain name to Stylistic Hosting?
Of course. If you already have a domain name with another web host or registered at a registrar then you can transfer it over to our platform, allowing you to keep everything in one place.
